The Judge…..A watch for style and enjoyment.

thejudgeThe Judge starring Robert Downey Jr. and Robert Duvall. It’s about a lawyer who goes home for his mother’s funeral and stays to defend his father who is a judge.
This is one of those films that my advance writing Professor (Dr. Fredericksmeyer) would probably have me watch to talk about. Watch it once for the enjoyment of these two actors and watch it a second time for it’s other great qualities like scene changes, flashbacks, and other elements that make this one of those discussion movies.
Enjoy the show.

San Andreas….That went by fast.

sanandreasSan Andreas starring Dwayne Johnson and Carla Gugino. For a 2 hour movie it went by fast, but that can be explained by all the action in this movie. It was not bad for something that geologist say has a lot of bad facts in it. I did find it entertaining and that’s what counts with disaster flicks.
Enjoy the movie.

Midnight In Paris & Magic In The Moonlight

midnightinparisMidnight In Paris starring Owen Wilson.
An interesting story about a writer. No the movie I expected and was pleasantly surprised because it’s a Woody Allen movie. As a matter of fact both of these movies are. And I found both not like any Woody Allen movies I had seen before.
magicinthemoonlightMagic In The Moonlight starring Emma Stone and Colin Firth brings us back to the time of spiritualist and the men who showed them to be frauds. It’s funny and worth a look.
Enjoy the movie.

Hercules, the making of a Legend

herculesHercules starring Dwayne Johnson, Ian McShane, Rufus Sewell, John Hurt and other fine actors. This movie went out of it’s way to demystify the legend of Hercules and did a great job of showing us the man known as Hercules. Legends come from some place and they have contain some facts, this story shows how facts become Legends. I found this worth the time to watch and watched the Extended Cut. The features are also fun to watch as well. Enjoy!

Dracula Untold, Edge of Tomorrow & Citizen Four.

draculauntoldDracula Untold, staring Luke Evans was a different take on the origins of Dracula. This was well done and very interesting. Luke does an excellent job of playing a prince who cares about his people and is willing to go that extra mile for them.
edgeEdge of Tomorrow, starring Tom Cruise, this movie is another one that will test the limits of your imagination. It contains some funny moments and overall was worth watching.
citizenfourCitizen Four, the story behind Edward Snowden. If you have been under a rock during all this or even watching this all unfold you may not know the whole story. Worth watching.
Enjoy the movies.

The Grand Budapest Hotel.

grandbudThe Grand Budapest Hotel, like a number of Wes Anderson movies seem to last longer then they really do. 40 mins of the movie is good the rest seems to be boring filler. For me after the movie is over I’m tired. I feel like the life has been sucked out of me. Some people think these are great movies, for me not so much. Last nights Oscars gave this movie three. I thought other pictures in those category deserved them more. Congratulations to those others who one last night because I thought all of them did great.

Act of Valor and Lone Survivor

actofvalorAct of Valor: Well worth watching, very gripping and full of information about the men in this group. Not giving anything away I will say it does make you appreciate the danger these men are in every day.
lonesurvivorLone Survivor: This film makes like the one above shows the dangers involved but it also shows the great compaction of people involved in the conflicts of their own country.
Keep watching.

For a Preservationist this movie was important, The Monuments Men.

monuments menThe Monuments Men told a bigger story then just the missing art and men. This movie stars George Clooney, Matt Damon, Bill Murray, Jean Dujardin, Hugh Bonneville, Bob Balaban, John Goodman, Dimitri Leonidas and Cate Blanchett. This is not just the story about trying to protect and get back pieces of art, but about the brave people who were trying to accomplish this and tried to not loss any of it. As a member of a preservation committee, a historian and archaeologist I found it spoke to me with a different passion. We lose buildings that represent a point in our creative past that will never been seen again on a daily basis. Art and artifacts that represent the collective accomplishments of mankind are stolen or destroyed also on a daily basis. Losing are heritage does have an impact on us all. Children will never get to see the wonders of the early Native Americans and their wonderful rock art at the rate hunters and others deface these places. The Giant Buddahs of Bamiyan destroyed in 2001, but there is momentum to rebuild them. You can not rebuild the rock art. Old buildings, artifacts that are rare, sites that have the potential to tell us more about certain times in our past need to be preserved from oil, gas, big companies, rich idiots and others who don’t care bout the collective past of humanity just their own and their all mighty dollar. Watch this movie. Remember that some things where lost to Russia at the end of the war. Help preserve and protect the past.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, the new one!

waltermittyThe Secret Life of Walter Mitty is a remake if your didn’t know but somehow I was glad I hadn’t seen the original when I sat down to watch this version starring Ben Stiller, Kristen Wiig, Adam Scott, and a number of other actors that made it fun to see who would show up next. This is about the death of Life Magazine in print at a sublevel, but the main focus is the cover of the final issue. Thee photo for the final cover was given to Walter Mitty, yet he seems to find it missing, sort of. His life filled with daydreams he finally has to go out into the real world to find the missing photo. The scenery is spectacular and the events are fun and exciting. I will probably watch this at least one more time. Enjoy!
